Most people have probably heard of Nudism in their lifetime. Perhaps the word conjures up images of swingers or well-tanned Europeans on nude beaches, but the understanding of Nudism often stops there for many people. Despite being practiced by millions worldwide, not much is known or discussed in the mainstream about Nudism or its cousin, Naturism.

In recent years, the term “Naturism” has become more popularized, often used interchangeably with “Nudism”, causing many to wonder what the difference is between these two concepts.

In recent years, the term “Naturism” has become more popularized, often used interchangeably with “Nudism”, causing many to wonder what the difference is between these two concepts. Each term has its own unique definitions, interpretations, and connotations, depending on who you ask.

What is Nudism?

Many explanations of Nudism define it as the practice of being naked whether in public or private settings, simply for the enjoyment of being nude. Within nudism, the focus is simply on being naked itself, and not necessarily any wider lifestyle or spirituality aspects. If you enjoy hanging out at home in the buff or sunbathing nude to avoid tan lines, you may be a nudist!

What is Naturism?

Naturism takes Nudism to the next level. Not only is it about being naked, but it also encompasses other wellness, spirituality, and lifestyle aspects. Naturists tend to enjoy spending time outdoors (‘nature’ IS in the term Naturism, after all) and partaking in healthy and wholesome activities such as camping, hiking, yoga, swimming, and more. Naturism also emphasizes the importance of community, with many Naturists belonging to local or online organizations where they can connect with other like-minded families, couples, and individuals. Naturists see their lifestyle as being more in harmony with nature, so many of them are vegetarian, non-smoking, and consider themselves pacifists and environmentalists.

Benefits of Naturism

So, what are the benefits of Naturism? Not surprisingly, the reported benefits of Naturism share many points in common with the benefits of Naked Yoga. Regular practitioners of both describe feelings of higher self-respect, improved body image, and a greater overall sense of well-being. The community aspects of Naturism also lead to higher reported life satisfaction, in which relationships are nurtured and body positivity is shared and cultivated within the group.

Even with so many appealing benefits to Naturism, the lifestyle may sound intimidating to those just getting started or thinking about it. If you’re interested in exploring but aren’t quite ready to be naked in public with others, first practice becoming more comfortable being nude at home. We came up with some fun ideas for how to spend more time naked at home, but our favorite is obviously Naked Yoga. Not only can you develop a more confident and healthy relationship with your body, but you’ll get excellent physical activity at the same time.
