My name is Jinny Ryann and I live in the Hollywood area. I’m originally from Boston, Massachusetts.
How long have you been doing yoga?
I’ve been doing yoga since I was a kid actually, off and on for a while.
When did you realize that yoga needed to be in your life consistently and what was the revelation?
I think as I got older and realized that I needed some sort of physical activity, workout routine. I had tried a lot of things that just felt very inauthentic and then realized that if I’m going to be exercising, I should enjoy myself too. I just really enjoy how yoga feels in my body. I’m happy it’s a part of my regular practice.
Did you grow up doing physical activities?
Not so much. I didn’t do sports or anything. I actually grew up doing a lot of theater, but my community theater director growing up was also a yoga teacher. So it was kind of always entwined there. I did see theater majors needing to do some yoga and breathwork, it makes sense that it aligns.
What is your favorite yoga pose and why?
I would say my favorite yoga pose is either Child’s Pose because it’s a great release or Tree Pose because I often doubt my flexibility or my strength, but I have a lot of confidence in my balance. So I feel pretty confident in Tree Pose.
What do you like about doing naked yoga versus clothed yoga?
Nothing gets in the way. There’s no fabric getting in the way. It feels really nice, especially outside with the fresh air and the sunlight on my body. It feels very natural.
What do you do for work?
I’m an actor, so I’m on strike right now. The good news out of it is that I’ve been able to put a lot more time into theater because that’s unaffected, so while I can’t do a lot of film stuff, which I definitely miss, I am getting to explore theater more, so going back to my roots is really nice. Taking it back home.
What’s an experience from your past that shaped who you are today?
Shortly after I graduated college, I did a program that was called the Artist as Citizen Conference, and it was basically combining the arts and creativity with social justice and putting those two together. It was just an amazing four days living in New York with other activist artists and it gave me the springboard into the real world that I needed after college.
If you had a superpower, what would it be and how would you use it?
This is probably the answer that everyone goes with but flying. I would just love to know how it feels to fly. And I would use it just to get the best out of my life, for adventures and exploring. And maybe for some good things now and then. Depends how fast I could fly and if I could arrive at a crime scene quickly.
What are your three things that you can’t live without on a daily basis?
My phone, coffee, and my cats. I need to be surrounded by animals. I always need to have access to furry animals in my life.
