Yogis Uncovered | Meet Adelina
In this edition of Yogis Uncovered, we sat down with one of our TNY veterans, Adelina! From her love of roller skating and holistic self-care to her inspiring mantra about going after your goals, Adelina shares her unique perspective on staying active, mindful, and true to yourself.
Hi, my name is Adelina! I’m from Seattle and I currently live in Venice, California.
What was it like growing up in Seattle?
Rainy and wet, but it was beautiful. There’s a lot of nature. I grew up five minutes from the river, 10 minutes from the lake, 20 minutes from the ocean. So it was really nice, but you always want what you don’t have and I didn’t have much sunshine. So here we are!
What do you do for work?
I’m a freelancer, I work in production, I kind of do a little bit of everything, I act, I model, I help as an assistant, I’ll be a runner, a talent wrangler, you name it.
How did you get into yoga?
I got into yoga a long time ago, honestly. I grew up playing sports my whole life and in order to treat your muscles with respect, you also have to warm them up in the right way and stretch and get them ready to do all the things you need to do for sports. And then as I’ve aged into my adult life, I try to make it a daily routine because as we age, so do our muscles. And I just want to keep them nice and strong.
What do you do for fun?
For fun I like to roller skate at the beach. I like to read, I like to journal, I like to make art, I draw, paint, do resin, literally everything, but mainly I like to skate. I like to be active and be in the sun and be by the ocean.
Do you have any pets?
Yes, I have two cats. They’re my babies. They’re named Maui and Pinto Bean.
What is a fun fact about yourself that people probably don’t know?
A lot of people know that I roller skate, but they don’t know the type of roller skating I do and how I skate. I do it in the skate park and I like to jump over fences and jump off of stairs and do all kinds of crazy things. I fight with concrete every single day.
What is your favorite food?
Lately I’ve been on a really big bell pepper kick, stuffed bell peppers with turkey and lots of garlic and onion and lime juice, it’s great. But it changes all the time
What’s your favorite self-care practice?
I’ve been really getting into being holistic in all aspects of my life. So I’ve been starting to make things myself, like my skincare, my toothpaste, whatever I can do to try to be as holistic as possible. I like learning about that as well. I’m just learning about all the ways that people used to fix common problems way back when, and how they would do it with two ingredients versus going to the store and buying something that has a hundred and fifty ingredients in it. So I think that’s been really cool mentally and spiritually and physically for me. I did not grow up super healthy, but as I’ve aged, I’ve become more aware of what I’m putting into my body, and that also includes what goes on top of my body.
Do you have any final words of advice to our members?
I heard something a few years ago and it really stuck with me, and it’s very simple, but basically - if you want to do something you’re going to do it. It should never just be “I want to do something, I want to do this, I want to do that”. If you want to you’re going to do it, so if you want to practice yoga you’re going to do it. If you want to make dinner tonight, you’re going to do it. For instance, when I want to practice more piano, I always sit there and have a conversation with myself and say “Do you really want to? Because if you want to, then you’re going to do it now, or in an hour” etc. If you want to do something, you’re going to do it.
